Have you ever had to deal with a flooded basement? Most people have at some point or another during their home ownership years. More than half of all homes that are built go through some kind of moisture problem. Leaky basements are more than just annoying; they can be incredibly dangerous as well. A wet basement can quickly become a breeding ground for mold, mildew and other hazardous substances. To fight against moisture problems, you should employ one of the many basement waterproofing products that are available to you. Here are some of the products that you have to choose from.
The next line of basement waterproofing defense is a thick sealant. Some of these sealants are called "sealer paint" and they are coated onto the floor and walls of the basement. Sometimes the sealant is labeled "liquid membrane." This sealant forms a rubber-like coating on the walls to prevent leaks from happening.
The "French drain" or "sump pump" is another method of basement waterproofing. Make sure that you do your research before purchasing a sump pump. You want your sump pump to be of high quality and able to work correctly for many years without replacement. Believe me, replacing it is not a lot of fun.
These basement waterproofing methods are easily purchased at a local home improvement or hardware store. These stores will usually have even more information on various products that you might not have thought of. Make sure, however, that you leave the basement waterproofing up to professionals whenever possible. Working with the concrete that forms the outside walls of your basement can be complicated and shouldn't be taken on unless you have experience.
Another reason to consult a professional is this: the do it yourself methods of basement waterproofing are not usually as effective as the methods that professional contractors have available to them. A professional can install a high quality waterproofing system that works on the outside of your home as well as on the inside. Before you go out and spend a bunch of money, see if any of the do it yourself basement waterproofing products work. Sometimes they are exactly what you need!
